Blue Monday

It’s ‘trending,’ known to be the most depressing day of the year, it’s not been scientifically proven, and the term has only been around since 2005. However, January in England tends to be extremely over cast and cold, limiting the amount of sun exposure we have and limiting even further the amount of vitamin D, a vitamin (dubbed the sunshine vitamin) which helps our bodies regulate mood. Researchers have also noted a trend of lower vitamin D levels in people with anxiety and/or depression.

Latch onto to today’s #BrewMonday and organise an impromptu coffee or tea catch-up with your friends.

Here are a few things you can do today, which may help reduce 'the blues':

  • You might not ‘feel like it’ but, smile, smile at someone you wouldn’t usually speak to or acknowledge. It’ll probably cheer them up too.
  • Make yourself an upbeat playlist.
  • Take some time for yourself, if you have a busy day and read your favourite book.
  • Text your best friend.
  • Look at some funny memes and Gifs.
  • Doodle
  • Look up a new recipe to try out for dinner.
  • Say yes to something spontaneously
  • Do the opposite of what makes you sad. This might be making yourself go out tonight, or, cancelling plans and staying in watching your favourite movie and cracking open a bottle…or making a steaming hot choc.

There are many ways to turn Blue Monday into a positive, perhaps life changing, day. You could be the reason that someone’s cliched blue Monday becomes their best day, a simple smile can make someone’s day and asking a friend over for a chit chat and coffee could be the perfect way to start off this last full week of January.
