Head of Business Development

Working Hours: 9.00 am to 5.30 pm (1-hour lunch), Monday to Friday. 37.5 hours per week. With further hours as required

Location: The role will primarily be based in our Watford HQ. This job will be a national role with extensive travel to meet partners and customers

Overview of the Role

This is an exciting new role at TCHC to help us take our growth to the next level.

The Head of Business Development objectives are to help us identify, exploit and create new opportunities to enable us to grow in line with our corporate aims and values.  Consulting with fellow directors and staff, you will devise our Growth Strategy, setting out short- and long-term plans for business growth.   You will be responsible for delivering that Strategy and securing new business through winning contracts, leading internal staff, partners and consultants including the preparation of bids and tenders. 
You will demonstrate strong negotiation and leadership skills, exhibiting a high level of diplomacy and integrity, and a proven ability to work with customers, stakeholders and staff at all levels. 

Main Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Development of the Growth Strategy with the Directors
  • Achievement of sales and profitability targets
  • To ensure procurement processes are in place in accordance with European and UK National Regulations
  • To manage the supply chain management process and ensure that projects are handed over to Operations during implementation
  • Promote the work of TCHC externally to partners, stakeholders and commissioners through direct engagement and marketing communications
  • Ensure Expressions of Interest, Pre-Qualification Questionnaires, and Invitation to Tenders are completed and submitted timely to prime providers, government departments, LEP’s and other funding bodies
  • Ensure that deadlines are met through effective planning and scheduling of works to ensure bids are completed to a high quality standard within the timeframes required.
  • Collaborate with TCHC colleagues to support the bid writing process, working closely with junior and senior members of staff on business development activities
  • Work closely with our Finance team to ensure bids have a robust financial model and contract delivery profiles are budgeted to ensure affordability
  • Work closely with the senior management team and Director’s to ensure key messages, achievements, knowledge of delivery, targets, and results are included in bids and all business development work
  • Work closely with Directors to ensure sign off for bids is done in a timely way to meet deadlines
  • Close monitoring of all portals and websites especially related to the Welfare to Work, Education and Justice sectors, with regular updates to Director’s to agree approval to bid on the opportunities available
  • Identify commercially funded opportunities for business development, promoting TCHC’s products, services, and training offers to potential funders and secure funding with them with a TCHC commercial offer
  • Think strategically - seeing the bigger picture and setting aims and objectives in order to develop and improve the business
  • Work strategically - carrying out necessary planning in order to implement operational changes
  • Draw up contracts with Partners and work on SLAs and delivery profiles
  • Ensure staff are on board throughout the organisation, and understand contract requirements, what was included in the bid, timetable for mobilisation and the need for change and what is required of them
  • Manage promotional strategy and activities with the marketing department

Skills & Attributes

  Essential Desirable
Educated to degree level or NVQ Level 6 in a relevant field and with substantial sector experience to back this up. x  
Knowledge/Technical Skills    
Fluent use of Microsoft Office suite essential. x  
Ability to sort, assess and analyse large quantities of data and report salient facts and findings in a sensible and concise manner. x  
Financial experience and literacy highly desirable     x
Experience of successfully leading significant public sector bid projects x  
Experience of working with diverse stakeholders including supply chain partners and local/national government x  
Experience of developing and delivering a business development strategy within a training and employment organisation    x
Preference will be given to candidates with at least 2 years’ experience in the training or welfare-to-work sectors.   x
