These courses will give you a practical introduction to landscaping. Providing you with an understanding of the type of work and career opportunities that are available in Horticulture.

What you will learn:

- Maintaining gardens throughout all seasons
- Plant identification – trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals
- Using a range of tools and machinery
- Laying different types of pathways
- Building and maintaining garden structures
- Health and safety
- Site development – how to plan areas for work
English & Maths – Functional skills
Certificate/Diploma in Practical Horticulture – Level 2
- Laying hard surfaces for external landscaping
- Construct and maintain boundaries
- Assess soil texture and condition
- Prepare ground or area for planting
- Deal with requests and provide advice to customers
- Identify plants by botanical name
- Identify damage caused by plant pests, diseases and disorders
- Produce a basic garden design and planting plan
- Design a contemporary style garden
- Design a garden in a historical context

- You must be aged between 16 – 18 years, or aged between 19 – 24 years and have a current Educational, health & care plan (EHCP)
- You must have legally lived in the UK for 3 years and, or a legal right as a resident of the UK at the start of your course.
- For EEA nationals residing in the UK before 31st December 2020, you must have applied or have settlement status under the EU settlement Scheme.
- For EEA nationals arriving after 31st December 2020, you must have leave to remain with permission to work.
- Progress on to an apprenticeship
- Increase your chances of gaining employment.
Career paths: Gardener, Greenkeeper, Garden/Landscape Designer, Ground Maintenance Worker, Horticultural Therapist, Tree Surgeon, Ecologist, Florist, Forester, Plant Nursery/Garden Centre Worker or Manager, Ranger, Environmental Specialist or Education and Conservation Assistant/Officer.
You can apply for a bursary to help towards attending the course. If eligible this can help in paying for travel by public transport, or support with petrol expenses, and lunch. The full amount is based on individual need and circumstance, which will be assessed at the start of the course. Speak to a member of staff to find out how a bursary could work for you.
