Ovie’s Work Placement
One of our Thurrock GAPS learners, Ovie, took part in a work placement at Aveley Community Hub.
Life Skills and Work Skills Tutor, Curtis Mckenzie, had this to say; “Ovie is a very sociable, positive and reliable individual who has shown, during his time at Thurrock GAPS, that he possesses the right skills and temperament required to step into the world of employment.”
Since October 4th 2023, Ovie has been undergoing a placement at the Aveley Community Hub under the guidance of Trish Dollard, the Community Hub Manager. His time at the hub has seen Ovie perform various tasks such as washing dishes from the café in the hub kitchen, cutting out recipe cards to go in Friday Food Bags (fresh ingredients in a bag to make a meal to feed four) and putting days of the week stickers on lids to be put on the food trays with meals to be delivered to the elderly and vulnerable in the Community.
Not only is Ovie actively developing effective communication and professional skills, but he is
also directly contributing to good causes that will enrich his local community and provide much needed support for those who need it most.
Charity Work at Stanley Lazell
Learners from our GAPS Thurrock Centre came together to support Thurrock Food Bank by collecting food donations and delivered their contributions at the local Morrisons supermarket in Grays.
Peter Newell, Pathfinder Lead & Operations Manager for Thurrock Food Bank spoke to learners about the vital work undertaken by Thurrock Food Bank.
This allowed our learners to learn about charities such as the British Red Cross, The Salvation Army and more. The learners then turned their attention to other aspects such as Push & Pull factors, the difference between refugees/asylum-seekers/migrants, the obstacles these groups may face when relocating etc.
